CHAPTER 28

JAMES

“Get out of here, monsieur capitaine!” shouted Lachapelle.

“Don’t take me for a helpless man, Doctor!” he replied.

Elliot gripped his pistol — a small, compact, but deadly, weapon. He turned the barrel of the gun to the dead and fired once at each enemy.

He hit three men, two in the trunk and one in the neck. For those who had not wielded a weapon for six standard months, his aim remained excellent — even though he had aimed the third shot in the head.

This time his accuracy wasn’t enough. The flesh of the dead was burned by several laser beams, and they continued to shoot with the same vigor as the living. Elliot saw several soldiers fall, and all who fell were captured and had their eyes burned.

Nine men died until the last attacker fell and Elliot sincerely hoped that those creatures were dead once and for all. Nine casualties against three… a price too high to pay.

Something told him that was just the beginning…

Only a small group of men remained, and among them was Dr. Lachapelle. His face was covered with sweat. He must have been between exhaustion and despair, but he still carried the pistol in his hand and kept his eyes on every detail.

“The dead have risen, capitaine! This must be linked to the disease…”

Elliot just nodded, not knowing what to say. Unable to comprehend that disease altogether, it was only left for the captain to pray Christine discovered something significant. He watched the few surviving soldiers clear the corridor, separating the bodies to the side and withdrawing their weapons.

“We'll have time to mourn the loss of our friends,” he said to all. He had lost Stevenson, his mentor, and personal friend. “We have one prisoner on the run at the moment. Her capture is a top priority. I'd like her to be captured alive for questioning,” and then he measured the words well while making a decision, “but, in the face of her dangerousness, I give permission to kill.”

The group took the weapons from the dead. Now each had a rifle and two pistols. At Elliot's permission, no one hesitated to program the weapons in mode two at full power. It was a matter of kill or be killed.

They were eight now. Pursuing in a larger group would be the most prudent; however, Elliot wanted Slansky captured soon, just as he was not wise. He trusted himself and his weapon to keep him alive.

“Let's split up into smaller groups,” ordered the captain, so they could cover more ground in less time. “We will form pairs. We know that Slansky went this way,” he pointed to the hall. “We'll start here.”

Pairs began to form, and some soldiers looked at each other, wondering who would have the honor of following alongside Elliot.

“Doctor?”

“Moi?! ” he asked incredulously.

“I'll go with you. We have a lot to talk about.”

He understood the look of haunting on the soldiers' faces. They were forced to leave Elliot on their own with the doctor. Everyone
